First launched in Vienna by the International Theatre Institute (ITI),

World Theatre Day is celebrated on March 27 throughout the world.

A communiqué released by the Ministry of culture and heritage preservation, on Thursday stresses Tunisia’s vibrant theatrical activity which spanned for over a century and which witnessed the emergence of three pioneering troupes namely “Ennejma”, “Echahama” and “El Adab”, which were later enriched by the troupe of the City of Tunis, as well as the creation of the Higher Institute of Dramatic Art (ESAD).

The communiqué adds that with the aim of fostering theatrical creativity and opening up the genre on new scenic arts, President Ben Ali has recently launched a nationwide consultation on the theatre for further creativity and innovation.

Several generations of Tunisian men and women have contributed to the lustre of the local dramatic scene, they include Mohamed Lahbib, Ali Ben Ayed, Mohamed Driss, Ahmed Kheiredine and more recently, Ezzeddine Madani, Ezzeddine Ganoun, Taoufik Jebali, Fadhel Jaibi, Mouna Noureddine and Jelila Baccar.

Since independence, the Tunisian dramatic scene has also been enriched by the presence of several private troupes, which have gained notoriety both in the country and abroad.
