Report: Yemen still in need of the European support

"Yemen is still in need to the international and European support, especially in various fields of development, confirming the authorized executive authorities and the diplomatic channels must play the major role in activating cooperation relations with the EU." A recent official report said.

The report, titled with "Yemen and the European Union" and published February 2009 by the Political Committee for External Relations and Expatriates in the Yemeni Shura Council, pointed out that Yemen's relations with the EU before the reunification of Yemen dated back to 1978 for North Yemen and 1982 for South Yemen.

The situation has changed after the reunification of Yemen as it expanded on 6 March 1995over the cooperation agreement signed in 1984 with the EU.

The external policy of the Yemeni political leadership has realized the importance of the European Union as a second economic bloc in the World, and the major player in the economic competitiveness, especially after the cold war period which characterized by the economic competition, the ideological and military conflict, the spread of democracy and the fight against terrorism.

The first visit of Yemen's President Ali Abdullah Saleh to the headquarters of the European Union in 2000, represented a key step in advancing the relationship of Yemen and the EU and moved towards a wider development cooperation, including the formation of a political dialogue committee between Yemen and the EU and the opening of the European Commission's office in Yemen.

The report indicated that a number of the EU countries is qualified as partners to Yemen, like: Germany, France, Britain, Italy, the Netherlands; but attracting them to investment projects in Yemen is not easy. To persuade them, Yemen needs to offer more facilities not less than those provided by other countries.

In its report, the committee noted that Yemen aspires in its relations with the EU to attract more investments and European countries to support the Yemeni economy through their grants and economic assistances and expanding their aids for Yemen's efforts in development and economic reforms.

The report said that Yemen has a great desire to extend its relations with the European countries for a number of considerations; First, the EU countries are trading partners for Yemen in both exports and imports. Second, they are the most important supporters of development in Yemen. Finally, the EU is one of the most important economic blocs in the World as it is the World's second largest economy after the United States.

The report recommended the importance of strengthening Yemen's bilateral relations with each country of the EU and activating the roles of civil society organizations, research and studies centers and political parties and newspapers in the Arab country to deal with more responsibilities for advancing its relationships with the EU.

The report also added that studying the current situation of the external aids for Yemen is a significant thing in order to enable Yemen to join the World Trade Organization.
