EU Presidency congratulates Algerian president on re-election

The EU Presidency has congratulated Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika on his re-election. A statement said Algeria was “an important and reliable political and economic partner of the European Union in the region of Mediterranean. Its role in the mutual fight against terrorism and illegal migration is significant and irreplaceable.”

It said the EU remained ready to support Algeria on its way towards economic prosperity, stability and further development of democracy.

The EU seeks to develop particular close relationship to Algeria, its geographical neighbour, and to support Algeria’s economic and political reforms.

The relationship emphasizes close cooperation on democratic reform, economic modernization, and migration issues. Algeria is a participant to the European Neighbourhood Policy. Algeria and the EU are bound by the legally binding treaty in the form of an Association agreement.

Trade remains another important subject of relations, as well as the development cooperation.
