EU contributes to raise human rights issues with Algeria

The European Commission is prepared to raise a number of human rights issues with the Algerian authorities under its Association Agreement with the country, European Commissioner for External Relations and Neighbourhood Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner has said.
The Commissioner laid out the EC’s position in a written reply to all those people who had sent her letters expressing their concern about Algeria’s human rights record.

She said the Association Agreement provided a solid framework to address issues of human rights and public freedoms in a more sustained way than before, “in a spirit of dialogue and in full respect of Algeria’s sovereignty”. She added that the possibility of taking measures affecting the application of the Agreement should only be considered as a last resort.
