Hardship allowances finally paid to Gaza families

Over 24,000 Palestinian families facing hardship in the Gaza Strip have finally been able to collect their social allowances overdue since December 2008.
The payment had been pending for more than three months due to lack of physical cash in the banks in Gaza, according to a joint press release from the European Commission and the Palestinian Authority.
It was made possible in April thanks to the availability of a limited amount of cash to allow the two PEGASE correspondent banks in Gaza to pay the allowances.

The payment is entirely funded by the Italian government, in coordination with the European Commission and the Ministry of Social Affairs of the Palestinian Authority.

However, while the payment of December 2008 has now been executed, the payment of March 2009 to vulnerable families in Gaza is still on hold due to the continued restrictions on the shipment of cash into Gaza by the Israeli authorities.
