Shield Mining to begin drilling at Mauritanian gold project

Australia’s Shield Mining Limited (“SHX”) has signed its maiden drilling contract to further explore the Tijirit gold project in Mauritania. The contract will see 2,000 metres of Reverse Circulation (RC) drilling commence this month to test the gold potential under sampled trenches excavated by Shield in recent months at the Tijirit Project, 35 kilometres southeast of Mauritania’s Tasiast gold mine.

Results from 83 2m trench samples have been received and represent three new trenches (T64, T65, T66) and infill or extensions of two other trenches (T56, T62). This work has generated upgraded intercepts, as follows:

The main trenching programme commenced in October 2008 and was completed at the end of January this year. Results from this work have been reported previously. Minor trenching at Eleanor has continued and results from this work are now reported above.

In addition to the trenching, 429 rock chip samples were collected from throughout the Tijirit Project with a concentration of the work on Sophie I & II, Lily and Eleanor. Values received >0.5 g/t Au are as follows:

These rockchip results together with those reported previously, delineate persistent mineralised horizons on surface, particularly at Eleanor and Sophie II. One example is at Eleanor where seven rockchip samples taken from surface outcrops of a single quartz vein over a strike length of 375m returned values of  2.92, 6.64, 1.86, 4.42, 0.02, 0.10, 9.07 g/t Au.

In view of the encouraging exploration results to date, coupled with a significant reduction in the cost of drilling in the region, Shield has signed a drilling contract with Drillcorp Sahara for 2000 metres of reverse circulation (RC) drilling to test the gold mineralisation potential under the trenches at the Eleanor and Sophie III prospects. The programme is scheduled to be completed during the last half of April.
