The Euro Mediterranean Energy Market Integration Project (MED-EMIP) has been called to moderate and support a dialogue about the use of oil shale in partner countries. Oil shale is a coal-like fossil fuel with low energy content, which can be used in an environmentally friendly way, contributing to the energy mix of a country.

A press release from the project said the first high-level planning workshop took place in Jordan on April 7, 8 and 9. Participants from Jordan, Syria, Egypt, Morocco and Turkey took part, as did representatives from oil companies. The cooperation will continue through a closer look at Estonian and German experiences, as well as investigating the possibility of forming an international or regional framework for sustainable development of environmentally friendly oil shale utilization.

The MED-EMIP project provides a platform for energy policy dialogue and exchange of experiences, leading to enhanced Euro-Med cooperation, integration of the energy markets and improved security and sustainability.
