Nigeria, Tunisia sign bilateral pact on news exchange

The Nigerian government has signed a bilateral agreement with its Tunisian counterpart to promote the exchange of news between the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) and Tunisian African Press (TFP).
The agreement was signed on Friday in Abuja at the end of the fourth session of the Nigeria/ Tunisia Joint Commission.
A communiqué of the meeting obtained by NAN also indicated that “both countries will exchange Television programmes dealing with culture, tourism and sports”.

It added that the exchanges “intend to specifically promote cooperation in broadcasting between the NAN and its the TFP.
According to the communiqué, other areas where agreements were reached between the two countries included avoidance of double taxation, investment promotion and Protection.

The agreements, endorsed by the minister of state for Foreign Affairs, Bagudu Hirse, and his Tunisian counterpart, Mr Maghrebian Harguem will cover a period of three years.
NAN reports that the commission was established in 1998.

Works of the fourth session of the Tunisian-Nigerian Joint Committee were held in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, under the co-chairmanship of Secretary of State in charge of Maghreb, Arab and African Affairs Abdelhafidh Herguem and Nigerian Foreign Minister Bagudu M. Hirse.

Mr. Herguem said the session had provided an opportunity for both sides to exchange views on various issues of mutual interest and look at means likely to boost bilateral co-operation in order to consolidate the Tunisian-Nigerian friendship relations, in accordance with the political will driving President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and President Umaru Yar’adua.

The Secretary of State highlighted the promising prospects offered to co-operation between the two countries in many fields, including trade, agriculture, health and communication technologies, calling to raise the volume of trade exchanges and diversify them.

During his talks with his Nigerian counterpart, Mr. Herguem pointed out that Tunisia, which is firmly attached to its African belonging, is seeking to consolidate its friendship and co-operation relations with African countries, in particular Nigeria.

In addition to the examination of the Tunisian-Nigerian relations and prospects for developing them, talks allowed to discuss international and regional issues of mutual interest.
