Positive atmosphere.. Lebanese national dialogue begins
President_Michel_Suleiman
The sixth session of Lebanese national dialogue began Tuesday, headed by President Michel Suleiman and attended by 14 political leaders. Official sources told KUNA that Suleiman said in a speech at the meeting that it was important to stress public calm and stability.
The meeting was held in a positive atmosphere and was preceded by talks between Sulaiman and Member of Parliament (MP) Michel Oun on the situations in the country.

The Lebanese political leaders tried to agree on a joint form of the project on defense strategy.

All proposals on the strategy will be studied by a specialized committee of experts.

Participants in the previous session stressed that the committee should try to prepare a draft for the national committee and agreed to cooperate with authorities to provide suitable political and security situation for the parliamentary elections that will be held on June 7.

Clinton: US supports voices of moderation

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made an unannounced visit to Lebanon on Sunday as the country readies for parliamentary elections that could see the militant group Hezbollah and its allies emerge victorious.

Clinton met with President Michel Sleiman during her hours-long trip seen as a bid to bolster the current pro-US majority in parliament ahead of the June 7 vote.

"The people of Lebanon must be able to choose their own representatives in open and fair elections, without the spectre of violence or intimidation, and free of outside influence," Clinton said in a statement to reporters travelling with her.

"Beyond the election, we will continue to support the voices of moderation in Lebanon, and the responsible institutions of the Lebanese state they are working hard to build," she added.

In a show of US impartiality ahead of the election, Sleiman was the only Lebanese official Clinton was scheduled to meet.(AFP)
