ISESCO emphasizes importance of supporting rights of writers

The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) called upon Islamic countries to emphasize the importance of reading and supporting the rights of writers and publishers in order to revive the publishing movement in the Muslim world.
In an address to the Muslim world marking the World Book and Copyright Day, which fell yesterday, ISESCO stressed the need for providing material and technical means for the establishment of public libraries in all civil and rural areas.
It also underscored the importance of government contributions to alleviate the costs of publishing books, as well as to reduce taxes on material used in printing to motivate publishers and develop the publishing industry and make books available at reasonable prices.

ISESCO noted that the current "situation" of authorship and publications in the Islamic world was not consistent with the nature of religion of Islam, which encourages reading and learning. In this context, it said such a situation must not be left undealt with, and called on all parties -- government sectors, publishing associations, writers'' unions, and the media -- to bear their responsibilities in this regard.
