Acclaimed veteran Egyptian musicians El Tanbura return to the Union Chapel to present an Arabian night of music and dance from Port Said as part of their 20th anniversary UK tour.
Custodians of Simsimiyya music, a traditional Egyptian lyre which dates back to the times of the Pharaohs, El Tanbura have mesmerised audiences worldwide with their unique repertoire of folk music, spiritual Dama songs & resistance anthems from the 1956 Suez Crisis.

The anniversary concert will feature songs from El Tanbura’s album Friends of Bamboute along with devotional Sufi chants from the Egyptian Delta region and a Tanoura dancer – an Egyptian whirling dervish.

Reviews

“Their mix of enchanting folk melodies and spiritual Sufi verse is mesmerizing”
****The Times

“El Tanbura mix chanting vocals with the desert flute, the nay, and the ancient lyre, the Simsimiyya, that looks like something you'd find on a painting in a Pharaoh's tomb”
****The Guardian

“El Tanbura have been playing the music of their native Port Said since the late 80s and it seems that their time has finally come”
****Songlines

“Utterly entrancing”
The Independent

“They croon the region’s old songs of love, pain, exile and resistance"
fRoots

“Rousing rebel music and spiritual Sufi-inspired songs”
**** London Evening Standard

“The band’s charm and appeal lies in a mixture of the sacred and the profane. They are streetwise characters, yet consummate musicians. They bewitch the audience with devotional chanting and then break the spell with some exuberant, laddish dancing”
Financial Times
