The 5th Syrian International Cartoon Exhibition 2009 was opened under the motto /Hunger/ at Dar al-Baath Gallery.
Syrian Information Minister Dr. Mohsen Bilal said that cartoon is an art, a culture, a media and a creative work which conveys the reality, adding that choosing Hunger as a motto for this year exhibition and tackling it in creative way by cartoonists from 75 countries reflect outcome of hunger on the peoples.

He pointed out that the exhibition wonders about the reason why humanity suffers from hunger in the 21st century which was expected to be a century of peace, stability and prosperity for humanity.

He added that the exhibition rang alarm bill to know what is happening in the one polar world, asserting that Syria calls for multi-polar world based on dialogue, understanding and diplomacy.

In a statement to Syrian News Agency (SANA), the Director of the 5th Syrian International Cartoon Contest Raed Khalil said "We have chosen the Hunger due to its persistency on the global arena, where FAO has announced that the number of hungry people exceeds one billion and the number of the children who daily die because of hunger reach 13,000. The 5-day exhibition includes 120 works.
