The riches and diversity of the Japanese calligraphy have been highlighted through an exhibition which kicked off Saturday evening in Moufdi Zakaria Culture Palace (Algiers).  This cultural event, inaugurated in the presence of Culture Minister Khalida Toumi and Japanese Ambassador to Algiers Takeshi Kamitani aims, according to the organisers, at "giving general idea on the Japanese calligraphy and the different customs."

In a brief statement, Khalida Toumi said that this exhibition falls as part of the cultural relations between our two countries, announcing that "Algeria plans to shelter Japan’s cultural days."

Japanese calligraphy  is a form of calligraphy, or artistic writing, used for writing the Japanese language. For a long time, the most esteemed calligrapher in Japan had been Wang Xizhi, a Chinese calligrapher in the 4th century but after the invention of Hiragana and Katakana, the Japanese unique syllabaries, the distinctive Japanese writing system developed and calligraphers produced styles intrinsic to Japan.

Japanese calligraphy shares its roots with Chinese calligraphy and many of its principles and techniques are very similar. It is most often written with ink, sumi (墨) on mulberry paper, washi (和紙) and it recognizes the same basic writing styles: tensho, or seal script (Chinese: zhuànshū), reisho, or clerical script (Chinese: lìshū), kaisho, or standard style (Chinese: kǎishū), gyosho, semi-cursive or running style (Chinese: xíngshū), and sosho, cursive or grass-style
