A meeting of the Joint Council between the EU and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has discussed a number of regional issues including the situation in the Middle East, terrorism and the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

A joint communiqué issued after the meeting reaffirmed the shared position that a just, comprehensive and lasting peace in the Middle East is vital to international peace and security, and expressed continued support for the Arab Peace Initiative.

The two sides confirmed their joint position that the goal remains the end of the 1967 occupation and the creation of an independent, democratic, contiguous and viable Palestinian state living side by side in peace and security with Israel and its other neighbours.

The communiqué also stressed the importance of combating terrorism in full respect of international law, human rights, international humanitarian law, and called for a Middle East free of WMD. The meeting also discussed cooperation, trade, Iraq and Iran, dialogue between cultures, climate change and the financial crisis.
