The Ministry of Education and UNICEF have completed an education project to rehabilitate and provide supplies to 140 schools in Rural Damascus. The project that ran for over 18 months was funded by the European Union with a contribution of almost USD 4 million.

The overall aim of this project was to ensure access to quality education for all children living in areas where there is high influx of refugees from Iraq. The criterion for the selection of these 140 schools was based on schools hosting Iraqi refugee children. The major intervention accomplished in the 140 schools, includes rehabilitation of school buildings, sanitation facilities for boys and girls, education supplies, schools furniture and equipment. The project also included an important training component aiming at improving educational quality and pedagogical environment in schools and key topics covered relate to active learning, child participation as part of the 'Child Friendly School' initiative. Training targeted Ministry of education staff, school principals and teachers.

On the occasion of the official completion of this project, an inauguration ceremony will take place in Jerji Touma School in Sahnaya on the 10 May. The event will be attended by Minister of Education, H.E. Mr. Ali Saad, Head of the European Commission Delegation, H.E. Ambassador Vassilis Bontosoglou, and the UNICEF Representative, Ms. Sherazade Boualia.

UNICEF’s education support focuses on supporting the expansion of the Syrian educational infrastructure to ensure access to education for all children, enhancing the quality of education through the application of the child friendly school initiative, and creating opportunities for the re-integration of dropouts through informal education and life-skills based education. UNICEF's intervention on behalf of Iraqi refugees and host community is based on a medium- and long-term plan as most of the refugees from Iraq in Syria have no immediate intention of returning home.

With an overall bilateral contribution of € 37.5 million since 2007, the European Commission is supporting Syria to cope with the influx of refugees in the fields of health, solid waste management and violence against women – in addition to the education sector.
