Gender_Equality-Syria
Training course in Stockholm, Sweden (during October 5–30, 2009) invites participants from six countries in the Middle East and Northern Africa (MENA) region, to increase their knowledge of and share experiences on how to promote human rights towards gender equality . All steps deal with the ‘hot’ spots endangering women’s human rights and development of gender equality, and focuses on successful practices on different levels in society. The Programme aims to contribute to awareness raising and action among decision- making bodies, institutions and organizations. The participants are encouraged to join forces to actively promote gender equality through change projects, designed to strengthen the commitment of organizations and institutions to invest in and institutionalize gender-sensitive change.

Target countries

The Programme targets the MENA region, and the following six countries have been selected for the first year: Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco and Syria.

Target Group

Institutions and organizations which can have an impact on gender-related improvements either by formal/legal responsibility or general interest in promoting women’s human rights are invited to participate. Four to five representatives from (i) national government, (ii) local and regional authorities, the private sector and relevant NGOs from each of the six countries will be selected to the training course.

Selection will be based on the principle of balanced representation of women and men.

Applying organizations and institutions are expected to provide indications of strong interest in, and to support mainstreaming of, women’s human rights and gender equality in all sectors. Individual participants are requested to prove interest in initiating change, invest time and efforts in new methods, to take on challenges and to have ability to lobby and possess strong leadership and training potential. The change project is a very important criteria for qualifying.

Language Requirements

The working language of the course will be English. An English language test should be made with an official body in the home country of the applicant, unless the applicant can provide other documentation to support her/his ability. The Swedish Embassy/ Consulate does not carry out language tests but may be able to recommend appropriate language institutes for conducting tests.
