Morocco, Palau establish diplomatic relations

Morocco and Palau decided to establish diplomatic relations at the level of ambassadors, said a joint statement signed on Friday by Morocco's Ambassador Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Mohammed Loulichki, and Palau's State Minister and Foreign Minister, Sandra Pierantozzi.

"The governments of the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Palau, guided by the common will of developing friendship and cooperation relations between the two countries in the political, economic, and cultural fields, among others, have decided to establish diplomatic relations at the level of ambassadors," the statement said.

Morocco and Palau are "fully aware that the establishment of these diplomatic relations, on the basis of equality, independence, territorial integrity and the non-interference in the states internal affairs, complies with the two countries' interests, and will promote peace and international security", the document added.

Voicing satisfaction at the decision, Pierantozzi told MAP that her country is eager to exchange expertise and develop cooperation relations with Morocco.

She underlined her country’s role within the United Nations (UN) and international forums to bring about peace, hoping that Palau will contribute to settle the regional dispute over the Sahara.
Following the signing ceremony, Pierantozzi was invited to a lunch offered in her honour by Loulichki.

Palau is an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean that includes 20,000 inhabitants. Its economy relies on fisheries, agriculture and tourism.(©MAP)
