Delayed Gaza hardship payments finally available

As of May 4, over 24,600 vulnerable families in Gaza will be able to collect their quarterly social allowance for March 2009, delayed because of restrictions in the supply of cash to banks in the Strip, a press release has said.

The allowances of NIS 1,000 (around €200) per entitled household, entirely funded by the Government of Italy, are channelled via the EU's PEGASE mechanism for assistance to the Palestinian Authority, which helps to ensure that the PA can meet its obligations towards all its citizens.

"The payment of this quarterly social allowance is meant to help meet the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable Palestinians. It is unfortunate that people who receive this allowance have had to face such a delay in getting access to this help" said Mr. Christian Berger, the European Commission Representative. "We continue to liaise closely with the Israeli authorities on this issue to ensure that sufficient cash reaches the Gaza strip to enable this payment to be made on a regular basis, as well as other crucial payments such as salaries and pensions."
