African Union and Arab League support power sharing through dialogue in Sudan

The consultative meeting in Khartoum between the government of Sudan, the African Union, the league of the Arab states, and the Organization of the Islamic Conference, has issued a statement saying that the visit has come in response to the invitation of the Sudanese government and that it was also in line with their commitments to coordinate efforts.

The statement said the Secretary General of the league of Arab states, Amre Mousa, the Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu and the chairperson of the African Union Commission Dr Jean Ping, held consultative meetings with the Sudanese leadership in Khartoum on 18th of May and exchanged views on the political development, the humanitarian and security situations in Darfur and the negative impact of the International Criminal Court decision on peace agreements and stability in Sudan.

The statement continued that the leaders of the three organizations were briefed on the positive political developments in Sudan, a peaceful political transformation and power sharing through dialogue and democratic elections, to be held in February 2010.

The participants were also informed about the ongoing Doha peace talks and the AU - Arab League joint effort to put an end to the conflict and realize peace and stability in Darfur.

The statement called upon the rebel movements to join the peace process and requested a support of international community to join the Darfur peace negotiations within the framework of the Arab League / African Union initiative, under the patronage of Qatar State.

The statement underlined the importance of improving the humanitarian situation in the region. The document pointed out that the three parties agreed to continue following up the developments of the humanitarian situation in Darfur, in coordination with the government, and pledged to contribute in providing the required humanitarian assistance.

It was indicated that "based on the announced statements and decisions the three organizations expressed, once again, their common position in supporting the Sudan in order to maintain its sovereignty , security, unity and the immunity of its leadership".

The statement has called upon the United Nation Security Council to heed requests made, respectively by the African Union, the Arab League and the organization of the Islamic Conference regarding the ICC decision on the president of The Republic of the Sudan.

The statement said that the three parties have agreed to coordinate and to combine efforts and intensify contacts with other intentional and regional grouping to realize that objective.

The three leaders called upon Chad and Sudan to respect each other sovereignty, good neighborliness, common interest and to fully adhere to the agreements between the two countries, particularly the Doha agreement signed on the 3rd of may 2009, the statement said.

Inspect the situation in Darfur

Mr Amro Musa, Mr  Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, Mr Jean Ping, and the accompanying delegation visited North Darfur State and were briefed by Chairman of the Joint Mission of the UN and the African Union on Darfur (UNAMID), Rodolphe Adada, on the current political, security and humanitarian situation in Darfur as well as issues related to the deployment of UNAMID forces.

In a statement to the press, UNAMID spokesman, Nour-Eddin Al-Mazini, said that the leaders of the Arab League, the African Union Commission and the Organization of Islamic Conference have appreciated the role of UNAMID in providing security and stability for the citizens of Darfur.

He affirmed UNAMID to work together with other parties toward realizing peace, security and reconciliation all over Darfur region. The delegation was accompanied during the visit by the Commissioner General for Humanitarian Aid, Hassabu Mohamed Abdul-Rahman.

The Secretary General of the Arab League, Amru Musa, has stressed that his visit to the State of North Darfur was to be seen within the frame of inspecting the situation in Darfur and within the framework of the Arab league, the Organization of the Islamic Conference and the African Union Commission efforts in the political and rehabilitation fields in Darfur.

Mr Musa pointed out that the Arab League delegation paid field visit to Abu Shouk, the IDP camp and toured the area.  Hr stressed the need for exerting more efforts in the various domains and for the resolution of the Darfur question so that the IDPS would return back to their home villages. He said the three bodies have come out with financial contributions to help with the rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts as well as provision of relief assistance.

He said the various political and legal questions involved in Darfur necessitate an Arab, an African and Islamic role to wards ending the suffering of the people in Darfur. The Governor of North Darfur State has commended the visit by the Arab League Secretary General and the accompanying important delegation which he said would boost and reinforce the Arab African and Islamic role that would ultimately back up the peace process and the peaceful solution.

He added in his briefing to the delegation that the security, humanitarian and social situations are stable in the region and that the organizations that have been ordered out of the country have not produced any negative impact on the humanitarian situation in the region.

The governor has conveyed to the delegation the rejection of the people and government in Darfur to the decision of the so called ICC against the head of the state saying such a decision would have negative impact against the very people of Darfur and would only increase their sufferings.
