UN urges Chad and Sudan to cease figthing

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Monday called on Sudan and Chad to cease fighting following reports of renewed intensified tensions between the neighbours. Ban said that he was "concerned" by the recent violence and tensions at Sudan-Chad border and called for a ceasefire.

The secretary general "underscores that there is no military solution in the situation in the sub-region and urges the governments of Chad and Sudan to refrain from any act that may lead to a further escalation of tensions," a UN spokesperson said.

The Sudanese government, which last week called Chad''s military activities an act of war because of attacks inside Sudanese territory, accused Chad over the weekend of launching a third airstrike on its soil. Chad last week accused Sudan of supporting columns of rebels advancing toward the capital N''Djamena with the intention of overthrowing the government.
