A parked car bomb ripped through a poor Shi'ite area of northwest Baghdad on Wednesday, killing 35 people and wounding 72 others near a popular restaurant, police said. The blast went off in the district of Shula, a mostly poor, on Wednesday, officials said.

"The explosion happened around a number of restaurants and retail shops," one official at Iraq's defence ministry said.

"It happened when the streets were filled with people. There were a large number of people shopping. Many people were sitting in the restaurants. That is why there are so many victims," the official said.

Shula in northwest Baghdad was also targeted by bombers on Dec. 25 last year, killing four people.

The last large-scale bomb attack in Iraq was on April 29, in which 51 people were killed in twin car bomb attacks in the Shia Sadr City district of Baghdad.

Despite the security gains in recent months in Iraq, there are still sporadic bombings, which shape setback to the Iraqi government.

Nearly 250 people were killed in major bombings in Baghdad alone last month. Made it the deadliest month for civilians since November.

U.S. forces are scheduled to leave Iraqi cities by June 30. The move will test the capabilities of Iraq's nascent security forces.

Iraqi security forces on Monday aired a video tape of a what they said was the captured leader of the so-called Islamic State of Iraq, an al Qaeda-linked organisation blamed for years of bloodshed in the country, but the group has denied the claim. (AFP, Reuters, Xinhua, AP, )
