Obama nominates ambassadors - Schmierer to Oman, Gray to Tunisia

US President Barack Obama nominates  10 ambassadors to the US Senate, including Richard J. Schmierer for US ambassador to Oman and Gordon Gray for US ambassador to Tunisia.

Schmierer has served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs since 2008. Immediately prior, he was director of the Office of Iraq Affairs in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs in the State Department since 2007.

He served a three-year assignment as the Public Affairs Officer at the American Consulate General in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia from 1985 to 1988. From 1988 to 1992, Schmierer served at the headquarters of the US Information Agency, first as head of the Middle East office of the International Visitor Program, and later in the agency's Office of European Affairs.

Schmierer returned to Saudi Arabia in August 1997, where he served as Counselor for Public Affairs at the US Embassy in Riyadh until June 2000.

From June 2004 to June 2005, Schmierer served as Embassy Counselor for Public Affairs in Baghdad.

Gray served as senior adviser to the ambassador at the US Embassy in Iraq from June 2008 until last May 2009.

Prior to his assignment in Iraq, he served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs from 2005 to 2008. His responsibilities included promoting US interests in the Arabian Peninsula and North Africa, and oversight of the Bureau's Regional Affairs Office.
Gray was Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Egypt from 2002 until 2005. His other foreign assignments include Morocco, Pakistan, Jordan and Canada.

Gray served in Washington as director of the office of Arabian Peninsula affairs, the office of peacekeeping and humanitarian operations, and the counter-terrorism regional affairs office.
