Ivan Lewis To Visit Syria & Lebanon

Ivan Lewis, UK Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, will visit Syria and Lebanon next week.

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesperson said: "Mr Lewis will be visiting Syria and Lebanon in his first trip to the region. This visit builds on our bilateral relations and emphasises the significant role that we think Syria and Lebanon can play in a comprehensive peace process. This will be an important chance to meet with his counterparts and discuss issues important to both sides.
The Minister will build on discussions the FS had with FM Muallem on regional and bilateral issues, including Lebanon, Israel, Iraq, Iran.
In Lebanon the Minister will be expressing our support for the democratic political process and the formation of a national unity government and urging the implementation of UNSCR 1701"

Walid al-Muallem, Syrian Foreign Minister, visited London last week (24-07-09) and met British Foreign Secretary David Miliband.

Miliband told a news conference that there is a vitally important relation between Britain and Syria.

Britain and Syria have strong interests in a stable, prosperous and peaceful Middle East, Miliband said.
