A partnership between the Arab world and Europe “is not only possible but essential”, according to Kader Arif, Member of the European Parliament, speaking in an interview answering 12 questions published by the EU funded Eurojar communications project.

As one of the rare Members of the European Parliament of Arab origin, Arif said, when asked about the role of Europe in supporting and reinforcing peace and stability in the Mediterranean region “The Mediterranean basin witnessed a series of violent events, thus, peace and conflict resolution was a priority. We have to admit today that despite the progress that has been made, the main objective has not been achieved yet… The EU should today give a priority to its Mediterranean partners on the political, economic and cultural levels.”

Kader Arif stressed that “a partnership between the Arab world and Europe is not only possible but essential”, explaining that the European Parliament had adopted a resolution outlining the necessity of establishing a global framework that encourages free dialogue between the different components of the Arab society, in an effort to launch a genuine reform process from within the Arab society.

Eurojar is one of 13 projects funded across the ENPI under EuropeAid’s €19 million Regional Information and Communication Programme, which seeks to increase awareness and understanding among the citizens of the area, about the EU, its policies and relations with their countries. The Eurojar budget amounts to €1.5 million and the project will last for one year.

Mr. Kader Arif is member of the European parliament from Arab origin. One of the rare “south Mediterranean” figures who have been elected in Strasbourg, Arif is a symbol of integration, not only on the social level, but also in the circles of European decision-making and legislation. He was our first guest on the site Eurojar for the month of June. In his 12 answers he gives a clear definition of a fair partnership between the north and the south of the Mediterranean, and underlines the characteristics of an unusual career.
