Iraq - Many dead in massive Baghdad explosions
Global Arab Network - - Adam Turner
Wednesday, 19 August 2009 15:00

The Iraqi capital faces its deadliest day since U.S. troops withdrew from urban centres -- as government buildings are hit in attacks that killed at least 75 people, 300 wounded in seven near-simultaneous attacks against central Baghdad; death toll projected to reach 100.

Parliament and Cabinet buildings, as well as Ministries of finance, foreign affairs, health and housing were targets of multiple car bombs and mortar strikes.

Attacks are first coordinated strikes against Green Zone, the heavily defended government zone in the center of the capital.

Violence comes on anniversary of 2003 attack against UN headquarters in Baghdad, in which 22 people died. (Reuters, Iraqi Local Press)
