Libya - Scottish Minister defends al-Megrahi release
Monday, 24 August 2009 16:00

Scottish Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill defends his decision to release the Libyan Abdel Basset Ali al-Megrahi, on compassionate grounds.

MacAskill told an emergency session of the Scottish Parliament that the decision was "not based on political, diplomatic or economic considerations".

Scotland has come under intense criticism, especially from the United States, since the MacAskill granted early release to 57-year-old Abdel Basset Ali al-Megrahi, citing provisions for compassionate release in Scottish law.

Megrahi, who is terminally ill with prostate cancer, received a hero's welcome upon his return to Libya.

He was jailed for life for the 1988 bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland, that killed 270 people. (Reuters)
