Yemen's higher security committee announced that military operations will continue in the country's Sa'dah governorate against the Huthi rebels.

The committee said in a press release that armed forces and the people of Sa'dah, in northeastern Yemen, will chase the rebels to ensure the safety of citizens and the opening of roads to deliver aid and food to the governorate's people, especially to those affected and displaced by the Huthi attacks.

It pointed out that the political leadership and government were keen on achieving security and stability in Sa'dah.

It said that the "terrorism members" were called on to comply with the six points mentioned by President Ali Abdullah Saleh in his speech, adding that the rebels ignored the call.

The committee blamed the rebels for the damaging of homes in Sa'dah, and promised that they would be bought to justice.

Meanwhile, a source an the Yemeni Defense Ministry said Thursday that security and military units in Sa'dah and Haraf Saifan area in Amran governorate succeeded in safeguarding a number of roads in several areas and in opening a number of roads that were blocked by the rebels.

It noted that an anti-terrorism unit forced Huthi rebels to flee their sites in Mahdha area, adding that several rebels were killed in the Black Mountain area in Haraf Saifan.

EU concerned
The European Union has expressed concern over the security situation in Yemen due to the recent escalation of the fighting around Sa'dah, which has caused a number of civilian casualties and a number of internally displaced people.

A statement by the current Swedish EU Presidency Wednesday night said the EU is also concerned about the impact of a further spread of the conflict to neighbouring Yemeni governorates and to the wider region.

It reminded all parties of their obligation to respect human rights law and international humanitarian law, noting that only a comprehensive political solution can achieve lasting peace, and called on all parties to work actively towards a negotiated settlement.

The 27-member European bloc reaffirmeed its support for a unified, stable and democratic Yemen.

"The European Union remains committed to reinforcing its partnership with Yemen in close co-operation with regional partners, especially the Gulf Cooperation Council," it added. (KUNA)
