Bulgaria is planning to discuss with officials from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) the possibility of investing in a project to establish a new Bulgarian electro-nuclear center, Bulgarian Minister of Economy and Energy Traicho Traikov said Saturday.

Traikov told KUNA that the Bulgarian offer comes at a time when the Balkan country is suffering from the economic and political ramifications of the global financial crisis, and is thus seeking foreign funding.

Bulgaria is trying to loosen the grip of Russian companies in the nuclear energy domain, he said.
He added that Bulgaria will discuss this offer with Saudi, Qatari and Kuwaiti private and public sectors.

Kuwaiti-Bulgarian talks, scheduled to take place in November, will be "different" as they will witness the implementation of bilateral cooperation in the domains of economy and investment based on good political ties, he said.

9th GCC meeting on peaceful use of nuclear energy kicks off

The ninth meeting of the Working Group responsible for monitoring the preparation of detailed studies of the uses of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes in the GCC countries began here on Saturday at the General Secretariat of the GCC.

The Secretariat said in a press statement issued here today that the meeting will discuss a number of topics related to uses of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
It added that the Group would look into a report on a workshop on key elements of the international legal infrastructure for the GCC as part of technical cooperation programs with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which were held in Qatar in July of last year.

The team will also consider at its ninth meeting the reference framework document for detailed studies of the uses of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
