Deputy Syrian Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Abdullah al-Dardari on Monday invited Cypriot businessmen to invest in Syria and establish joint projects in various sectors.

The call of al-Dardari came during a meeting with a delegation of Cypriot businessmen accompanying President of Cyprus during his current visit to Syria.

An official statement said the two sides reviewed the growing opportunities for cooperation between the two countries and ways to develop them to include various economic, commercial, industrial, investment and infrastructure arenas as well as the importance of increasing trade volume.

The statement added that al-Dardari presented the delegation with an overview of economic and financial developments taking place in Syria and the investment opportunities, calling Cypriot businessmen to invest in Syria in all sectors.

Tourist Cooperation

Syrian Minister of Tourism Saadallah Agha al-Qala'a discussed with the Cypriot businessmen delegation prospects of Syrian-Cypriot cooperation, means of bolstering economic ties, holding joint projects and efforts to increase the number of tourists between the two countries.

Minister Agha al-Qala'a said that Syria seeks to establish genuine tourist partnership with Cyprus with the aim of making the two countries one tourist destination capable of attracting tourists and invigorate tourist exchange between the two countries.

He added that the investment systems in Syria have become more favourable to attract investment.

Chairman of the Cypriot Chamber of Trade and Commerce Christodoulous Angastiniotis underlined the desire of the Cypriot investors to hold projects and settle investment projects with economic utility in Syria, depending on the factors of the Syrian tourist product.

Economic Cooperation

For his part, the Syrian Minister of Economy and Trade Amer Hosni Lutfi discussed with the Cypriot businessmen delegation means of consolidating trade relations between the two friendly countries, indicating that there is a far greater potential to enhance mutual ties and increase trade exchange volume.

Lutfi pointed out that there are a lot of investment chances in the industrial and tourist domains, adding that the trade exchange volume between Syria and Cyprus is not satisfactory.

He said that there is a great potential for increasing the trade exchange volume through exchanging goods lists, participating in international fairs and investment in the Syrian free zones.

Investment Cooperation

Also, the Syrian Minister of Industry Fouad Issa al-Jouni discussed with the visiting delegation cooperation relations, holding joint investment projects in the industrial sector and in all domains.

He referred to the possibility of setting up joint companies between the Syrian and Cypriot private sectors, affirming there would be great facilities for holding private investment projects by the Cypriot companies in Syria.

Minister al-Jouni said he is looking forward towards increasing investment projects in the fields of construction and alternative energy.

Friendly relations

The state visit of President Demetris Christofias of Cyprus and his wife to Damascus comes in the framework of both countries' desire to develop the bilateral relations in all fields, particularly in light of the international current conditions and the global financial crisis.

The meeting between Presidents Bashar al-Assad and Christofias on the sidelines of the Union for the Mediterranean Summit held in Paris in July 2008 reflected common keenness on the friendly relations between the tow countries, during which the two Presidents agreed to work for solving obstacles that hinder progress of these relations in the interests of both countries.

President al-Assad last June discussed with Cypriot Foreign Minister Marcos Kyprianou the bilateral relations and aspects of developing them in all domains as well as the problem between the two parts of Cyprus, stressing the importance of adopting dialogue as a way to solve the Cypriot problem.

In Turn, Cyprus underlines the important role of Syria in the region and its right to restore the occupied Golan and the necessity of Israeli withdrawal from all the occupied Arab lands since 1967 in light of international relevant resolutions.

Regular meetings of the Syrian-Cypriot Joint Committee on trade, economic and scientific cooperation contribute to boosting the bilateral relations between the two countries and increasing trade exchange volume.

Syria and Cyprus are linked by a number of agreements in tourism, transport, economy, industry, culture, combating drugs and avoiding double taxation, in addition to an agreement between SANA and CNA news agencies. In this regard, Syrian-Cypriot Businessmen Council met on June 10, 2008, discussing means of activating cooperation and increasing trade exchange volume between the two countries. (KUNA, SANA)
