An EU-funded project which encourages women not to desert their villages in the Bekaa region in Lebanon by helping them make a living was the focus of the latest Eurojar article in the L’Orient Le jour.

The project, ‘Development of the competitiveness of rural production in favour of marginalised communities affected by war’, aims at preventing the rural exodus affecting the villages of the region. In these farming villages, women used to produce their foodstuff traditionally and struggle to make money from it, but thanks to the project, their production and sales have risen to another scale.

The feature says that the project, implemented by the Italian NGO ICU and Caritas-Lebanon and funded by the EU with over €1 million, set up a production centre with new modern equipment. In the centre, women are provided with EU-standard production training and assistance. Their produce, ranging from jam, vinegar, gherkins and rose water, to kichk and Lebanese cheese, is then distributed to supermarkets and food stores under the label “Intajouna”, meaning “our production”.

Eurojar is one of 13 projects funded across the ENPI under EuropeAid’s €19 million Regional Information and Communication Programme, which seeks to increase awareness and understanding among the citizens of the area, about the EU, its policies and relations with their countries. The Eurojar budget amounts to €1.5 million and the project will last for one year. As well as l’Orient le Jour, it publishes articles highlighting EU cooperation in Le Commerce du Levant and Al-Hayat and broadcasts weekly reportages on LBCI and LBCSat.
