The EU-funded education programme Tempus is playing a key role in developing higher education in Syria, according to the latest article published within the Eurojar series in the daily Al-Hayat.

The programme was launched in Syria in 2002 for a period of four years with a budget of €10 million, and has since been extended to 2013. Its aim is to assist Syria in implementing reforms in the field of higher education by creating new universities and institutes, improving the admissions system, modernising the syllabus, developing research infrastructure and implementing student and teacher exchange programmes.

The feature says 33 projects are carried out under Tempus in various areas, ranging from developing specialised programmes and courses to setting up electronic libraries in Syrian universities. “Tempus is an essential tool for cooperation in higher education in Syria and plays an important role in most of the areas of higher education. It has had an impact on the modernisation of curricula and teaching methods, the improvement of courses quality and the reinforcement of various facilities,” says Ramy Al-Ayoubi, the programme’s coordinator in Syria.

The Trans-European Mobility Scheme for University Studies (Tempus) supports efforts by the Partner Countries to modernise their higher education systems, and creates opportunities for cooperation among higher education actors of the EU and the participating countries through joint projects. It also enhances understanding between cultures, encouraging a people-to-people approach, and promotes convergence with EU developments in higher education, leading to more jobs and growth.
