An engraved limestone tile dating back to the Neolithic era (10th millennium BC) was found at an archeological site on the banks of the Euphrates River in the Manbij area, northern Syria.

The tile was found during transferring some antique dwellings discovered by the Syrian-French archeological expedition in 2000, Assistant Director for Scientific Affairs at the Aleppo Department of Archeology and Museums Thaer Yerte said.

The tile is 200 cm long, 61 cm wide and 16 cm high. The carvings consist of abstract geometrical art and a depiction of a human figure kneeling with its hands raised above the head.

The discovery is the oldest depiction of worship in the area, reflecting the intellectual and symbolic development of the region's inhabitants, in addition to affirming that several structures found near the Euphrates River were used for ceremonial rituals around 12,000 years ago. (SANA)
