Saif al-Islam Gaddafi rejects IRA damages
Monday, 07 September 2009 19:15

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of Libyan leader Colonel Gaddafi, tells Sky News that Libya is not prepared to compensate victims of IRA terrorist attacks.

Last year Prime Minister Gordon Brown met campaigners seeking a cash payout from the Gaddafi regime, which supplied Semtex explosives used by republican bomb-makers in Northern Ireland.

But he told their lawyer in a letter last October that he did not consider it "appropriate" for the government to enter bilateral talks with Libya on the matter, citing the need for continued co-operation from the north African state on issues like terrorism.

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the Libyan leader's son, has now said any legal claims would be contested in the courts.

He told Sky News: "They (the victims' families) have their lawyers, we have our lawyers.

"Anyone can knock on our door. You go to the court."

He agreed that Libya would resist any initial compensation claim.

Mr Gaddafi went on to describe the behaviour of British politicians in the recent row over the release of Lockerbie bomber Abdel Basset al-Megrahi as "disgusting and immoral".

Shadow Foreign Secretary William Hague said arguments over the release of the Lockerbie bomber were a normal part of democracy. (By Channel 4 News)
