UNESCO: UAE efforts highlight diversity of Arab culture in the world

The Director General of the UNESCO Koichiro Matsuura hailed the efforts of the United Arab Emirates in highlighting the diversity of Arab culture in the world.
Matsuura praised the close cooperation between the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) and the UNESCO, particularly in the field of intangible cultural heritage.

His comments came as Abu Dhabi is readying to host the fourth meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee of Intangible Heritage of the UNESCO, held on 28th of September - 2nd of October, 2009.

During an interview with the new magazine 'Intangible Heritage', whose first publication coincides with meeting, Matsuura said the Committee will include new elements on the UNESCO list for intangible heritage.

In Abu Dhabi, the Committee will decide whether the elements which were nominated and examined shall or shall not be inscribed.

In November 2008, 90 cultural elements were included in the Representative List, where they were considered as mere artifacts in 2001 and 2003 and 2005.

Matsuura noted that financial resources would be provided for the elements in the list of intangible cultural heritage, which is in urgent need of safeguarding.

The United Arab Emirates cooperation with the UNESCO is not new.

In 1988 the Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture was established with financial support from the UAE, which helped to promote the emergence of the rich diversity of Arab culture in the world.

The UAE is a member of the World Heritage Convention in 1972, and its role in supporting intangible heritage is particularly notable, especially in the meetings of 2003 and 2007.

Abu Dhabi is also distributing a UNESCO book on intangible heritage.
