Sudan: Fighting with rebels ceased, government forces in control

Fighting with rebels in Korma area has ceased and the government forces are in control, Governor of north Darfur state Mohammad Yousif Kabr said on Thursday.

Kabr told the media here that news about fightings continuing were false, saying everything was under control at the moment in Korma.

Clashes erupted between government forces and the Sudanese liberation movement last Thursday north of the Darfur region with number of causalities still undetermined.

The rebel group dubbed "Nour", named after the liberation's movement leader Abdulwahed Mohammad Nour, denied that the government forces took control of the region, blaming the government for backing the Janjaweed militias and said they were responsible of killing civilians during the week-long clashes.

The clashes came within weeks from resuming peace talks in Darfur under Qatari and African Union (AU) sponsorship to bring an end to the dispute in the region which began in 2003.

An AU committee will hold a meeting in New York Thursday to discuss the Darfur problem on the sideline of the 64th UN General Assembly. (KUNA)
