Syria and Jordan ratified a number of accords concerning water resources, borders' demarcation and customs.
The two sides decided, at meetings, to boost economic cooperation between Syria and Jordan, Syrian Minister of Economy and Trade Amir Lutfi said in a joint Jordanian-Syrian statement.

It is important to encourage joint companies, Lutfi said as he noted positive results these companies have achieved.

The joint ministerial meetings headed by Lutfi and Jordanian Minister of Industry and Trade Marwan Al-Hadidi aimed at facilitating the cooperation between both countries in various domains, Lutfi said. Syria is willing to be part of the Jordanian-Egyptian custom union if it served as a core for the joint Arab cooperation, he said, adding that would reflect the recommendations made at the Arab Economic, Development, and Social Summit held in Kuwait last January.

Jordan is keen on boosting economic and investment cooperation with Syria, Al-Hadidi said.

Current commercial exchange does not reflect strong economic ties that exist between the two countries, he said, adding that both countries should cooperate to meet up with international standards.

It is important to build an Arab power network, gas pipes and lay the grounds for achieving Arab free trade zone, he added.

Memorandums of understanding concerning development projects, economy, education, marine training were ratified, along with a protocol on power and power reservation, as wellas renewable energy.

A number of MoUs covering broadcasting, youth, higher education, planning are ready to be ratified.

The meetings of the preparatory Syrian-Jordanian commission started yesterday, discussing issues related to economy, transport, agriculture, trade, education and higher education, culture, health, oil, electricity, tourism, media, NGOs and environment. The 12th meeting of the Syrian-Jordanian committee was held on December 2007 in Amman where 14 agreements and protocols on economy, commerce, water, power, industry, culture and education were ratified.
