The EU-funded MAM (Municipal Administration Modernisation) programme has organised an event to introduce some of its activities in the old city of Damascus, in the framework of the integrated conservation and development plan of the old city, managed by the project.

A press release from the EU Delegation in Syria said that as part of the institutional reform action plan, a One Stop Shop was being launched for municipal services in the Directorate of the Old City of Damascus: it will deliver services to the citizens within the old city and for the surrounding area, such as licences for restoration, re-building, digging, etc.

Within the framework of tourism promotion activities in the old city, the programme has also developed electronic screens in different locations. These screens show various visitor routes in addition to relevant information, photos and maps in Arabic, English and French. The programme has also established two centres for tourism services, to provide information and promotional materials such as maps and brochures.

The event is on Monday, October 5, from 7-9pm.

The MAM programme runs from May 2005 until December 2009, with EU funding of €18 million. Its objective is to improve the quality and effectiveness of local governance inseven Syrian cities: Aleppo, Damascus, Deir Ezzor, Homs, Lattakia, Palmyra and Tartous.By supporting the management of urban growth and ensuring a sustainable infrastructure, the programme is designed to improve the quality of life of people in urban centres.
