Libya to sign five military deals with Russia

Russia has five military procurement contracts underway with Libya, as reported by the news agency "RIA Novosti", quoting Alexander Mikheyev, deputy director general of Rosoboronexport, the Federal Agency in charge of managing former Soviet Union's military exports, and head of the Russian delegation at the "Lavex 2009" air show in Tripoli.

Mikheyev said the arms deals involved military equipment, the modernisation of T-72 tanks, and the general supply of spare parts for the Libyan ground forces.

'The Libyan military wants to have only the most advanced military equipment because neighbouring countries, including Egypt, have recently bought new weaponry and strengthened their defence potential,' he said.

In addition, the contracts involve equipment for the Libyan Navy while Rosoboronexport is also participating in a Libyan tender to deliver aircraft and air defence systems.

In the same day, Libya's state-run news agency says a Libyan fighter jet crashed into a house during an international air show in the country's capital, killing the pilot and the co-pilot.

The JANA report says three people on the ground were wounded when the Soviet-designed MiG-23 jet crashed early Wednesday in an eastern suburb of Tripoli, destroying most of the impacted house. (JANA, AP, WAPA)
