Middle Euphrates valley is one of the richest archaeological sites in Syria, well-known for its archaeological findings reflecting the different historical ages and the thousand years of architectural progress passed over the area.

The region has become the destination of foreign travellers and amateur archaeologists since the 18th century, said Yasser Shuhan Director of Antiquities and Museums in Deir Ezzor.

French, German and American archaeological missions have long started to arrive in the region to survey archaeological sites and to draw maps and charts of the region.

Excavation missions working at the site uncovered thousands of archaeological findings of great historical, scientific and artistic significance that is exhibited at the most famous museums worldwide.

The painting of Zimri-Lim, King of Mari that was found on the southern hallway in the 106 courtyard of the Royal Palace is showcased at Louvre Museum.

A scene depicting goddess Ishtar treading on a lion, a symbol of power and handing the sceptre to King Lim surrounded by priests is located at the centre of the painting.

Maia, the Goddess of Spring is portrayed holding a jar with water and fish flowing out, a symbol of fertility.

Images of two trees of life and palm trees indicating fruitfulness and another mythological image representing winged animals are positioned on both sides of the painting, while at the top a picture of two white doves epitomizes peace.

Thousands of cuneiform tablets and clay and stone statues found in the Royal Palace in Mari are also displayed in France.

The exhibition of the Faculty of Fine Arts at American Yale University showcases whole scenes from the Christian church that were uncovered by the university's archaeological mission at Dura Europos site. (AANA)
