The General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL), the electric utility company in charge of all electrical power generation, transmission, distribution and customer services in Libya, recently held a GECOL-IFS Conference at the “That El-Emad” centre in Tripoli marking the official celebration of the Libya’s first major ERP implementation put in place four years ago with IFS, the global enterprise applications company.

The full-day event was geared to both current and potential users of the IFS ERP solution adopted by the utility provider, celebrating the longstanding partnership between GECOL and the ERP vendor and highlighting IFS’ strong background in providing proven solutions to the Utility sector.

The high-profile event was attended by GECOL’s customer and supplier base of enterprises and government agencies. The presentations included a discussion of the future of ERP in Libya as well as a live demonstration of the latest version of the IFS Application - IFS Enterprise Explorer, a rich internet application designed specifically to significantly increase the usability of IFS Applications and improve user productivity throughout the business. Speaking at the GECOL-IFS Conference were Abulgasem Uneas - GECOL Chairman, Alastair Sorbie - IFS CEO, Dan Matthews - IFS Chief Technology Officer and Ian Fleming - Managing Director, IFS Middle East, Africa, South Asia.

The GECOL Chairman speaking at the conference said: “Due to new legislation setting corporate governance standards for institutions in Libya, GECOL needed a more market-driven approach and had a requirement to improve performance by implementing industry best practise processes.

As a result, GECOL's senior executives faced the important tasks of realigning current business processes and selecting a single integrated ERP solution that would both support and enhance GECOL’s vision.”

He continued: “To achieve these goals, GECOL chose IFS as its ERP solution to successfully combine information flow through projects, maintenance, logistics, treasury and operation data to achieve high performance in our daily operations. The IFS implementation also promoted GECOL's transformation from a planning-economy oriented business operation to a market-driven operation. IFS has helped GECOL to develop a centralized organization structure, clarify management responsibility and improve the quality of its service to its Libyan customers.”

Alastair Sorbie, IFS CEO commented: “IFS are proud to mark the four year milestone in the ongoing ERP implementation project with GECOL at this event in Libya. IFS is a leader in ERP in the Utilities sector, boasting flexible and scalable ERP functionalities which equip GECOL with the necessary tools to simplify and integrate business processes.”

“IFS’ component-based solutions have allowed GECOL a smooth upgrade of their IT environment in response to the company’s evolving business requirements over the last four years. IFS Applications allows GECOL to manage all fundamental tasks within the utility business such as managing assets, their own people and customers. GECOL has also been able to reap the benefits of IFS long tradition in the utility business where knowledge and know how has been transferred from IFS experts to GECOL personnel through close cooperation.
