Archaeological discoveries - Coins Commemorating al-Malik al-Zahir Unearthed in Syria PDF Print E-mail

Syrian archaeologists, National expedition for Archaeology,  working at Masyaf Castle (in Hama city, Central Syria) uncovered coins commemorating al-Malik al-Zahir Ghazi bin Salah al-Din, industrial facility engraved in the rock as well as glass gems and stones used in mosaic and pond ornamentation.

The industrial facility is a 4 meters by 4 meters hall engraved in the rock with 1meter long, 20cm wide and 15cm deep grooves dating back to the 13th century of the Ayyubid period (1140 -1273 AD), Haitham Hassan, Head of the national archeological expedition said .

While excavating at the Royal Palace, which dates back to the beginning of the 13 century, stairs engraved in the rock leading to large reception and banquets hall of 120m2 and other two halls were uncovered.

Underground water tanks were thought to be still buried beneath the debris. Pottery jars, dishes and glasses belonging to Ayyubid, Mamluk and Ottoman eras were also unearthed. (SANA)
