The Poetry Academy of the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) announced holding a special evening of Rabaaba music(Rebec) and poetry today  Thursday 19th November.

The heritage event will host the poet Mohammed bin Saeed Al Raqraqi Al Mazrouei, and Rabaaba instrument musician Obaid bin Rashed Al Mansouri.

The poet will cite a number of verses related to life in the desert, on the background of the traditional music sound of the Rabaaba, a musical instrument commonly used by Bedouins.

In addition to the music and poetry entertainment show, the two guests will also be giving talks on the process of preserving poetry in the past, as poems were memorised by heart and passed down from one generation to the next orally in the absence of relying on written documentations.

In his talk, Al Mazrouei will address the relationship between local poetry and life in the desert, where each occasion demands a certain poetry rhythm.

Al Mazrouei will also talk about his experiences when he accompanied the late Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, founder of UAE federation, giving his impression on life and the achievements of that era.

The poet had presented for years an Abu Dhabi TV programme on traditional poetry, and had previously served as the head of the Council of Bedouin Poets in the Western Region.

He was also one of the first presenters to introduce the Rabaaba culture on UAE television screens.

A proud owner of Majahim (dark-skinned) camels that frequently take part in contests in the Arab Gulf region, Al Mazrouei will also have two of his poetry collections published in Abu Dhabi soon.
