Omani economy is doing well and it is far more resilient to the present global financial condition. That is why the situation is favourable for most of the companies operating from Oman. This was stated by Mike Craig, Trade Adviser of Northern Ireland Technology and Development Centre (NITDC) in an exclusive interview with the Observer.

A British trade mission from Northern Ireland arrived here yesterday to explore new avenues for bilateral trade between United Kingdom and the Sultanate. The trade mission is represented by 13 UK companies and will stay in Oman for two days to discuss various aspects of trade with officials and trade representatives in the Sultanate.

“The delegation comprises representatives from 13 companies working in sectors like foodstuff, education and engineering, supply of equipment, hotel and mining equipment. The mission intends to explore opportunities in a wide range of sectors including diesel generators, management information system, rapid self test diagnostic system, dairy products, management services in the fields of sports and event management, manufacturing of road signs and traffic control equipment and machinery to produce concrete building blocks and bricks,” said Craig.

Commenting on the mission, Craig said: “The delegation is working under the banner of Invest Northern Ireland (Invest NI) and would discuss trade opportunities with business leaders and government officials. The mission is based on bilateral trade opportunities that will give a boost to trade between both the countries,” he said.

Northern Ireland, which was one of the first organisations to set up an operation in the Arabian Gulf, has had a base in Dubai since 1994. The delegation includes companies across a broad range of business sectors, which have a long-standing commitment to international trade and have been active in the Gulf for many years. Among the industries represented in the delegation are construction, healthcare, food and recruitment. Northern Ireland is an acknowledged global centre of excellence in construction equipment, ICT and food processing, particularly dairy products.

The engineering and construction group includes companies specialising in emergency portable power, minerals extraction and processing and solar-powered directional signs. “Northern Ireland"s expertise in the design and manufacture of mobile machinery for crushing, screening and washing is represented by Terex Finlay. It is renowned throughout the world as the market leader in the sector,” said Craig.

"This is a broad delegation of experienced export companies offering a wide range of products and expert services. Many have been operating in the Middle East, especially the Gulf, for some time and have significant business here. They are well versed in business procedures and requirements in the region,” he said. When asked about investment opportunities in Oman Craig said, “We feel very comfortable here due to Oman’s long and friendly relationship with the UK”. (Omannet)
