The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) jointly with the World Bank and the Tunisian Ministry of Education and Training will hold an international high-level conference on “Building Knowledge Economies: Towards Creating Job-Opportunities, Promoting Competitiveness and Achieving a Balanced Development”, on December 1st, in Tunisia, under the patronage of Mr Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, President of the Tunisian Republic.

Speaking at the opening of the conference will be Dr Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri, Director General of ISESCO; and Mrs Shamshad Akhtar, Vice-President of the World Bank.

The conference will see the participation of a panel of Ministers of Economy, Employment, Finance, Education, as well as Ministers of Higher Education and Scientific Research from around the world; along with a host of leading policy-makers, academics, specialized researchers, businessmen, and representatives of international organizations and local community bodies and institutions.

The three-day conference will address four main axes, namely ways to build successful knowledge economies, promoting innovation and competitiveness, building creative and innovative capacities, as well as executable steps for stakeholders and decision-makers.

The conference will also discuss the means to advance international cooperation, so as to stimulate job creation and economic growth. In this regard, the issue of integration in the world economy will be addressed as a tool to stimulate job creation, labor mobility and achieve sustainable economic development.

Other objectives of the conference include taking stock of the experiences of a number of developed countries and fast-growing economies such as Finland , France , India , South Korea and the United States of America . Such experiences may help the developing counties, especially in the MENA region, apply effective policies with regard to education, labor-market, science, technology and innovation and thus boost their competitiveness in the world economy.

The conference will also feature leading and innovative initiatives and discuss the best practices in the field of building knowledge economies, especially in the MENA region.

A high-level roundtable on knowledge economies will be held within the framework of the conference, followed by six working sessions on the themes: “building knowledge economies - setting the stage”; “process of a knowledge economy”; “local-level and sectoral perspectives”; “Arab cultural perspectives on the knowledge economy”; “designing a knowledge economy campaign and engaging broadly”; “the road to the knowledge economy in the MENA region: conclusions and next steps”.
