The European Commission has allocated €8 million to Morocco for the completion of the tram network under the programme for the sustainable integrated development of urban transport systems Rabat - Salé.

A delegation press release said the programme, funded in the framework of the Neighbourhoud Investment Facility (NIF), aims to sustainably improve mobility and urban environment in Greater Rabat-Salé through the establishment of a tram network consisting of two lines of a total length of about 19km serving 32 stations, and a central maintenance and operation located in Salé.

The project will also improve the urban environment, in terms of safety, health, energy efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and controlling urban congestion. Infrastructure work began in 2007 and 2008 and the launch of the two lines is planned for 2010-2011 with an estimated traffic of 180,000 passengers per day.

Further contributions to the programme are being provided through loans from the European Investment Bank and the French development agency.

Bringing together grant funding from the European Commission and the EU Member States and loans from European Public Finance Institutions, the NIF is an innovative instrument of the ENP, aiming at mobilising additional funding for infrastructure projects in the Neighbourhood area. The NIF focuses on the key sectors of energy, environment and transport while also providing support to SMEs development and social sector infrastructures.
