Electricity production in Oman stood at 12,579 (GW) per hour during the first eight months in 2009 comparing to 10,828 (GW) per hour during the same period in 2008, constituting 16.2 per cent rise. The bulletin issued by the Oman National Economy Ministry pointed out that the total electricity production in the Sultanate rose by 16.5 per cent or (12,080.5 GW per hour) at the end of August 2009 comparing to 10,371.5 (GW) per hour during the same period in 2008.

Meanwhile, the 22nd meeting of the GCC Electric Cooperation Committee was held in Muscat at Al Bustan Palace Hotel under the chairmanship of Ahmed bin Abdulnabi Macki, Minister of National Economy and Deputy Chairman of Financial Affairs and Energy Resources Council. The meeting was attended by the GCC Electricity and Water Ministers.

While opening the meeting, Macki pointed out that the agenda of the meeting includes the recommendations submitted by specialists at the different committees on developing and enhancing electricity and water co-operation opportunities among the GCC countries in a bid to implement the directives of the GCC leaders.

“One of the major achievements made by the Electricity and Water Co-operation Committee is the completion of the first and second stages of the electricity linkage project among the GCC countries which is moving ahead with the implementation of the third stage”, he added. Macki hoped that the next stage will witness more cooperation which realises the aspirations of the GCC citizens.

On his part, Mohammed bin Ubaid al Mazrouey, Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Affairs of the GCC countries , said that one of the major achievements is the operation of the first stage of the electricity grid project among four countries namely, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Qatar.

He also pointed out that the next stage includes connecting the UAE to the Sultanate, an added value to the integration among the GCC countries. “The agenda of the meeting includes the electricity grid projects, the progress made, the activity of the technical committees for joint work, the electricity and water data bases, the forum for GCC electricity regulators and exporting electricity outside the GCC countries.
