Abu Dhabi - New mechanism to choose “Million’s poet”

UAE (Abu Dhabi) – The fourth season of the Nabati poetry Competition “Million’s Poet” will kick off tonight in live broadcast on Abu Dhabi TV.

Details on the new season of the biggest live competition dedicated to keep dialect poetry alive organized and produced by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) was reveled yesterday in a press conference held at the Cultural Foundation in Abu Dhabi.

A short documentary film on the previous three seasons was shown in the begging of the conference which showed moments of victory for the winners and great poetical talents discovered through the competition.

“The competition emphasizes the great effort of the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage in promoting Nabati poetry by highlighting the role of Abu Dhabi and its vision to embrace this poetry and the transfer of cultural achievement to the whole world to reach every Arab in the various parts of the world” said HE Mohammed Khalaf Al Mazrouei, Director General of (ADACH) in the press conference.

He considered the program “a new and sustained element of our culture and our vision that does not end at a certain extent, and does not accept less than the success of our strategic plan which we launched during the years (2008 - 2012), in a way that translates the level of our ambitions, and also our love for our country and our language, our quest to preserve our heritage, our culture, authenticity and traditions”.

He said “Nabati poetry is a prestige in a large number of Arab countries, particularly in the Gulf region where it is the common literature form since the fourth century AH, and since then it is the best way to document the authentic Bedouins life with all its details and beauty, expressing people's concerns, issues and feelings. Today, after more than 1000 year on the virtual origination of Nabati poetry, this unique form of literature continues to brilliance and draws millions of authentic poetry lovers , particularly after the radical change in Arab cultural scan caused by launching "Million's Poet" competition since 2006 ;so that some researchers points two important phase in Nabati poetry, the first aged thousand years old, while the second is aged nearly four years only , it is the age of "Million's Poet" competition”.

Al Mazrouei highlighted the successes of the competition “the program has witnessed, since the launch of the first session, the emergence of 192 poets representing different parts of the world. These poets, despite their great poetry, were not very known in the region. Today, and to our more than 18 million viewers, their poetry and talents are well known. Now, it has become the dream of every poet in the Arab world to participate in the program and access not only to the shortlist of the 48-poet but to enter the group of the 100 poets as this means for them highlighting their poetic talents and the exposure of their poems to the largest possible audience, despite the tough competition taking place in the program between the poets to reach stardom and win the title” he said.

Al Mazrouei added “this program, thanks to the care and support of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, has become today the focus of attention of university students and their research topics. It is enough to point out that many foreign newspapers and magazines in the world have requested translations of the poems participating in the program, which emphasizes the success of the program in it former three seasons. We thank you all today for your participation in our celebration of the success of the program and the continuity of its cultural and pioneering influence”.

Sultan Al Amimi , Director of Poetry Academy and member of jury panel said in the press conference “Nabati poetry expresses the senescence of humans, and therefore taking interest in it and preserving its historical memory, and documenting it is primarily showing interest in humans and their historical memory; we must not forget that "Million's Poet" has provided an opportunity for showing poets who were absent from the scene of poetry and the Arab cultural scene for various reasons, and for a long time from the audio-visual and even paper media” .

Al Amimi explained the new procedures in the competition, he said “Convinced of the importance of opinion and its opposed, the supreme committee in the program is hosting for the first time two specialist analyses in each episode who will critic the contesters and the jury panel too three times in each episode”.

The list of the 48 poets participating in the competition were carefully selected to be the best poets from 12 deferent countries among them 5 poets from Jordan, 4 from the UAE, 19 from Saudi Arabia, one poet from Bahrain, 2 poets from Oman, one poet from Syria, one from Iraq, 3 poets from Qatar, 2 poets from Yemen, one poet from Tunisia, one poet from Sudan, and 8 poets from Kuwait.

“The mechanism of distributing poets in each episode is based on several criteria; poets who were given the higher degrees by the jury panel will be distributed equally on the first stage of the competition that consists of 6 episodes. Two top poets will participate in each episode.

The committee took into consideration not to have more than one female poet in each episode of the first stage” Al Amimi said.

The Committee also took into account to have poets from deferent nationalities and schools in each episode.

The first stage of the competition consists of six episodes where 8 poets will participate in each one; the jury qualifies two of them and another two are qualified by public voting. In this stage the jury is accounted for 50% of grades and the other 50 % is for the public voting.

In the second stage , which includes 24 poets divided into four episodes, in each episode six poets will participate , and the jury qualifies the poet with the highest degrees out of 50 degrees, while another poet is qualify by public voting out of 50 degrees.

Phase III of the competition consists of two episodes in each episode four poets will be participating, one poet will get a qualified card for the final stage before the jury, while other two poets will be qualified by the public voting.

In the pre-final stage six poets are competing to be qualified; 50% for the jury and other 50% for the public vote.

In the following episode, which marked the final stage, the poet with lowest votes will be excluded while the winner will be chosen from the five finalists; in this stage the jury will qualify him by 60% and 40% for public vote.

Abdullah Al-Amiri, Director of Culture and Arts department in ADACH, reveled the details of “Million’s Poet Concerts” the musical program accompanying the competition where top Arab singers and musical performance will be featured every week.

“Music occupies an important place in the heritage of every country and reflects its culture. Therefore the new season will not be limited to the participation of the artist, who sings for guest poets, but we will have many groups and popular music during these concerts, in the belief of the importance of this art as well as the fact that it is highly respected by the peoples of the world” Al Amiri said.

The concerts of "Prince of Poets" and "Million's Poet" have witnessed, in their previous seasons, a huge success, which translated the vision of the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage that sees a need to support creativity and appreciation of art and literature, as part of its inherent belief in the importance of poetry in lives of people in the various segments of Arab societies.

“These events attracted more than 125,000 people who flocked to enjoy the evenings of "Prince of Poets" and "Million's Poet", which was brought to life by more than 100 artists from the UAE, GCC and other Arab countries” he said .

“In this season a top star will sing with a popular band a special poem for the guest poet during the episodes in addition to a concert in the fallowing day.
We are pleased to welcome you to attend the start of the new season, and enjoy the creativity of artists from the UAE, Gulf and Arab countries” he added.
