Million’s Poet: Women take it serious when it comes to poetry

UAE (Abu Dhabi) - Another thrilling episode of “Million’s Poet” Nabati poetry TV competition is expected to surprise poetry lovers Wednesday when episode five will be broadcast live on Abu Dhabi TV from Al Raha Beach Theater in the capital.

In its season four, Arabs biggest poetry live competition organized and produced by Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) has witnessed many surprises so far as three female poets were qualified to participate in the second phase of the competition which happens for the first time in the history of the competition. In addition to Jordanian female poet Roba Al Douekat and Saudi female poet Hisa Helal who were qualified by the jury panel in previous episodes, another female poet from Jordan succeed to gain the highest points last episode with a poem inspired by the clashes brook out between football fans from Algeria and Egypt lately. Poet Halima Abadi was given 46 points out of 50 by the jury panel that described here poem as powerful, deals with sensitive issue in a smart way and passes a positive massage on Arab unity. 

Halima commented “I was very upset with each team reaction after the game and the poem came to express my feelings and thoughts toward the matter”

Halima think that female poets in this season are powerful and the competition between them will get tough in the second phase “I believe at least one of us will battle till the last episode” she said. 

Halima’s poem is an example of new trends in Nabati poetry which deals with social and day today issues after it was more focused on love and tribes prides mostly.

Another female poet will participate in episode 6 next week; all eyes will be on Saudi poet Mastora Al Ahmadi wandering if she can battle men in their field for a loge time.

On the other hand, eight poets are going to stand on Al Raha Beach Theater tonight trying to impress the jury panel with their talents. 

Poets participating in this episode are: Abdulla Al Jaberi from UAE, Bandr Al Jahni, Saud Al Awaji, Farhan Al Azimi from Saudi Arabia, Ali Al Kabei from Oman , Falah Al Otabei from Kuwait, Mohammed Al Raheidi From Sudan and Muhanad Al Adhamat from Jordan.

Each poet is required to deliver a poem in front of a specialized panel who qualify the top 2 poets for the second phase and the other six poets are qualified via audience voting via SMS through out the week where the top two poets are qualified. 

The Millions’ Poet project was launched in 2006 under the patronage of His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.

The competition aims to preserve one of the ancient literature forms in Arabia and part of authentic Bedouin heritage.

The show presents 48 poets, carefully selected by a panel of experts on Nabati poetry (dialect poetry), from thousands of applicants after a six-week tour of the Arabian Gulf countries with contestants from all over the Arab world. The poets will battle it out, seeking to impress the jury and the audience with their poetic skills, in the hope of making it through to the grand final.

Contestants are judged using a mixture of jury votes, live audience votes via the in-theatre voting pods and SMS voting throughout the weeks. The Millions’ Poet who wins first place will receive an increased grand prize of 5 million AED ($1,362,000), second place will be awarded 4 million AED ($ 1,090,000), third place 3 million AED ($ 817,000), fourth place 2 million AED ($ 545,000) and fifth place 1 million AED ($ 272,000)
