Tunisia (Tunis) - The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), jointly with the General Secretariat of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) and the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), will organize an international symposium on “Youth and the Future: Current Challenges, Capacity Building and Participation Mechanisms”, in Tunis, during the period from 14 to 16 January 2010.

Held on the occasion of the “International Year of Youth”, and under the high patronage of Tunisian President Mr Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, the symposium aims to enhance youth capacities and enable them to express themselves and voice their problems; collaborate with them in preparing practical plans and executive programmes to address their issues; and examine ways to involve them in public affairs.

It also seeks to coordinate efforts among the various actors and organs to address the problems facing the present and future of the youth; study the means available for youth to enhance dialogue and communication among each others; probe into common challenges; discuss the means to narrow the knowledge gap between the youth of the North and their peers in the South; as well as to correct stereotypes about each others.

In the same vein, the symposium will tackle the following axes: youth in the world: current problems and challenges; dialogue and communication among and with youth: bases, means and goals; involvement of youth in public affairs: reality and aspirations; engagement of youth in the development process through education quality and adapted training; as well as youth and entrenching common universal values.

The symposium will see the participation of international, Islamic and Arab organizations concerned with youth issues; experts from the United Nations and its specialized organs; experts and specialized researchers; along with international and regional youth organizations.

The main reference documents for this symposium will include: the United Nations Charter; human rights instruments; and the Tunis Covenant on Promoting Muslim Youth and Enhancing their Status in the Muslim World which was issued by the international conference on “Youth Issues in the Islamic World: Present and Future Challenges” (Tunis, 2008).

For the record, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted the initiative put forward by the Tunisian President on making 2010 an “International Year of Youth” in last December.
