Iraq: New death penalty for Chemical Ali

In Iraqi court hands down another death sentence to a cousin of Saddam Hussein, this time for a deadly gas attack in 1988.
He never denied the charges and was heard on tapes of meetings recorded at the time saying: "I will kill them all with chemical weapons! Who is going to say anything? The international community? **** them! The international community and those who listen to them."

Majid has already received three death sentences - one for genocide, for directing the campaign against the Kurds, one for a massacre of Shia civilians in southern Iraq in 1991, and one for the killing of more Shia in Baghdad and Najaf in 1999.

The carrying out of his first death sentence, approved in 2008, has been delayed by wrangles over the fate of a co-defendant whose execution has yet to be signed off by the presidential council.

The prime minister, Nuri al-Maliki is now expected to push for the hanging to be carried out before general elections in March, though he has the right to appeal first. (Source: Reuters, Telegraph)
